How to program key fob using Tech 2 scan tool

You will need a GM Tech 2 Scan Tool with it’s 32MB card (updated) and the CANdi module. I have seen the pair sell for as cheap as $224 on Obd2tool.com and as much as $3000 off eBay.

Btw, if you look for a decent tool for use only, it’s ok to have a cheap but functional china clone.

Seems like the old answers are a cheaper and easier solution.
1. Have a GM dealer do it
2. Have a locksmith do it
3. Buy the Dorman part that comes with a programming module for less than $80.

Those options are cheaper if you do not have a Tech 2. This is why you will expect to pay for a Tech 2.

Which is like saying it is cheaper to take my car to the shop and have them change the water pump for $100 instead of me going to sears and spending $250 on a cool set of craftsman tools and a toolbox and doing the work myself. Personally, I am heading to Sears, because those tools will keep on saving me money for the rest of my life.

Yes, the Tech 2 does other things besides programming a key fob and you really would have to be a chevy buff / mechanic before it would be worth buying one. The tech 2 is not for everyone.

The Tech 2 is a powerful, versatile hand-held diagnostic computer, designed to help diagnose and repair automotive electronic systems. The Tech 2 supports the changes in the on-board electronic systems for model years 1992 to 2013. With the addition of the CAN Diagnostic Interface (CANdi) module, Tech 2 will support GM on-board electronic systems thru 2013.

The CANdi is an in-cable module that works with existing Tech 2 components including the VCI, cables and adapters to add CAN diagnostic capability to the Tech 2 tester. The CANdi module is fully backward compatible with current Tech 2 functionality and operates transparently when diagnosing non-CAN-equipped vehicles.

The Tech 2 has since been replaced with GM MDI

Should I buy GM MDI instead of Tech 2 clone

The Tech2 clone is definitely fine, but I think people looking for a good tool now should really look at an MDI clone instead.

The Future of the Tech 2

The Tech 2 remains an essential tool through at least the 2010 model year. The GM MDI will not support past models when its diagnostic capabilities are introduced. And, the Tech2 will continue to be needed to diagnose all vehicles fromprevious model years. Remote programming with the Tech 2 will continue to be supported for use on all 2007 and previous vehicles.Additional information will be supplied in future.

HOW WILL THE G-M MDI BE USED?

The new G-M MDI can be used only in the Pass-Thru method. This means you can use it as your programming tool, while your Tech 2/CANdi remains available for diagnostics and other duties.

I have issues with it, however:

The GM MDI will not support past models when its diagnostic capabilities are introduced.
I’m not sure what this means. The GM MDI WILL clearly support past model years with the Tech2win applications. So I’m not sure what this statement actually means. The only thing I can think of is that GM will remove pass thru support at a later date, but since its all been cracked already, this shouldn’t matter.

The new G-M MDI can be used only in the Pass-Thru method. This means you can use it as your programming tool, while your Tech 2/CANdi remains available for diagnostics and other duties.
This statement implies that the pass thru method is a bad thing. Considering the Tech2win application works perfectly with EVERY function on all GM vehicles as far back as 1996, I don’t understand what this is really saying. It implies that you can’t do diagnostic troubleshooting using pass-thru, when in fact you can.

As far as I can tell from my testing, this is a basic sales pitch in order to encourage people to keep the Tech2 as well as purchase a MDI2 unit – both of which are incredibly expensive if purchased legitimately through GM.

In reality, you don’t need a  Obd2 scan tool Tech2 and a MDI2. An MDI interface is more than enough especially on our older cars like the C5 corvette which GM will unlikely ever release further PCM upgrades for given the fact they were discontinued over 10 years ago.

GM TECH2 Customer feedback

10-2

I work for a Gm dealership and was a little skeptical at first about this GM Tech 2. After receiving very quick from seller
I tested it out on every platform, programming, system scans, live plot, remote functions, everything and it has matched everything my shops
factory 2000 dollar Tech 2 has done. Best money I’ve spent on a tool in a very long time!

This Tech II Scan Tool clone performs exactly the same as dealership scan tool. Everything listed in the sale was there.
This is obviously a knock off of the original tool but you would never know if someone did not tell you. It comes without any labels or stickers on it,
but they were included in a bag ready for you to put them on the tool and accessories. I have used this tool on a 2004 Pontiac grand prix and a 2006 grand
prix to perform diagnostics and set up a new body control module. I went through every screen, tried all the function tests and learn procedures.
No issues with this tool at all. Cables, plugs and accessories are all of quality construction. I could not be happier with this purchase.

I have been very happy with this scanner, the cables can be a bit finicky at times, and I had to remove and reinstall the memory card several times to
get a good connection on it, but have had no issues at all other than that. I have used it on 2004 Pontiac Bonneville, Saab and Chevrolet Suburban all worked well.

I was pretty skeptical when saw these clone at cheap 250$-380$. Most dealers charge a $100+ diagnostic fee just to hook theirs up to your car, what a joke.
I got one English language software version with 32 MB Card, CANDI, TIS2000 and other diagnostic cables. And I hooked it up to test engine, ABS, transmission etc,
stored DTCs, Freeze Frame, live data, all the test results were displayed on the large, easy-to-read backlit screen. Keeping the GM Tech 2 for half a year,
no blue/blank screen or communication issue. Now the device is in good condition.

Got my GM Tech2 from www.obd2tool.com today, it looks and functions well for a clone. The tech2 and CANDI module worked perfect to diagnose my bad HVAC air door actuator.
I have an older HP laptop running win7 and it has a serial port so has no problem to install software. Time will tell how this works out.

The tech2 clone has done everything I have used it for. I have check and cleared codes including freeze frame data. I used it to test injectors on my friends NOVA 5.3 swap.
It allowed me to pulse each injector so we knew they were not clogged.

Still no problems with this GM Tech2 clone. I was able to use SPS programming to update the theft module OS in my Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS.

And I found this tool can be used on OBD1 cars. I tried it to diagnose my friend’s 1994 Pontiac Trans Am, it worked!
