How-to’s of GM Tech2 Crankshaft Position Variation Learn

All right, today we’re going to be going through a crankshaft position relearn sequence on a Chevy Colorado or a GMC Canyon. My trucks of 2005 GMC Canyon with 3.5 liter, so the first thing we’re going to do today is to have our GM Tech 2 Scan Tool to setup here, we’re going to plug it into the DC port down here and we’re going to have the obd2 port hooked up down here. Once we have that all hooked up, first thing we’re gonna do is we wanna start our truck and you want to have it warmed up. You can see I’m about probably at 160 right now I think the bare minimum is about 155, so I’m just above the line of what we need to be.

What is tech2?

What is tech2?

The Tech 2 is a powerful, versatile hand-held diagnostic computer, designed to help diagnose and repair today’s automotive electronic systems. The Tech 2 supports the changes in the on-board electronic systems for model years 1996 and beyond. With the addition of the CAN Diagnostic Interface (CANdi) module, Tech 2 will support GM on-board electronic systems for years to come.

What-is-tech2

The CANdi is an in-cable module that works with existing Tech 2 components including the VCI, cables and adapters to add CAN diagnostic capability to the Tech 2 tester. The CANdi module is fully backward compatible with current Tech 2 functionality and operates transparently when diagnosing non-CAN-equipped vehicles.

The Tech 2 provides extensive diagnostic capability through the 32MB PCMCIA card. The PCMCIA card stores diagnostic information intended to diagnose powertrain, body or chassis control modules and related vehicle malfunctions. It also contains the Service Programming System (SPS) application which allows the Tech 2 to program control modules with vehicle calibration data.

The PCMCIA card is updated by linking the Tech 2 to a PC that has access to the ACDelco TDS website. This method of communication provides flexibility for updating the card with vehicle calibration data, mid-year and new-model-year vehicle diagnostics and Tech 2 software enhancements. Software updates are distributed to GM dealers automatically via TIS2WEB at the GM Global Connect web site or go directly to the TIS2WEB site to download updates at any time.

The Tech 2 is capable of capturing a snapshot of vital performance data at idle or during a test drive. You can replay the snapshot or plot and graph the data directly on the Tech 2, or the snapshot file may be uploaded to an approved GM Techline terminal. The file may also be stored on the CD-ROM terminal for future reference. The snapshot capability allows you to see where an intermittent fault occurred, even if it did not set a trouble code.
Model Year Coverage

92 up OBD systems CAN equipped vehicle coverage with CANdi module
PC Requirements:

Only required if reprogramming or Tech 2 diagnostic software update is performed. Tech 2 is a stand-alone diagnostic tool. Currently GM is recommending a minimum Intel i5 processor
Recommended package:

Intel Core i5 at 2.6GHz 64 bit
2) USB 2.0 (or better) ports
500GB Hard drive
4GB ram
Windows 7 Professional 64bit
Internet Explorer 9 +
Wireless capability
Note: The Tech 2 uses a legacy DB9 Serial Null modem cable to connect to PC. Current spec PC do not have this connection. It will be necessary to have the null modem cable and a Tripplite Serial to USB adapter properly configured on the machine to perform reprogramming or diagnostic software updates.

How to use the GM Tech2 scan tool to perform GM SPS

Topic: GM SPS Programming: Tech2 Tool Pass Thru Mode ECU TIS2Web TDS Calibration Update
How to use the Tech 2 Scan Tool to perform GM SPS Programming in what is known as Pass-Thru or Legacy Pass Thru mode for calibration updates. This can be for the ECU or any programmable module in the vehicle, such as the EBCM, TCM, or Radio that you may want to reflash.

tech_2-1

I’m going to show you a little bit newer technology. So we’re still with the tech two and at this point I’ve pre-connected some things up here I’ve got connected to the diagnostic interface this the unit accessory for the tech two called a candy module a controller area network diagnostic interface. So this connects to the vehicle and then it connects to the tech 2 and then in the tech 2.

tech_2-2

If we were to go into our SPS system what I’m gonna try to show you here. This particular vehicle work we’re working on right now is a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt.

tech_2-3

If we go to request. What we’re gonna find out really quick is after we say Chevrolet well. We don’t have anything newer than 2007 that we can select. Because this 2000 which is what the remote mode is set up for.

tech_2-4

So how can we update the firmware on the modules for this 2009 well we’re gonna have to go to this to web on the internet. So I’ve got this cable already connected to a laptop over here and we’re going to go ahead and show you how to stew web works which replaced this 2000. So I’m gonna set this guy right next to this laptop sitting on the passenger seat here.

Warning: Pay very close attention to the instructions around power cabling and battery readiness as a power fluctuation during an SPS programming procedure can permanently damage a controller module.

This applies to the genuine Vetronix, HP or Bosch built Tech2 as well as high quality Chinese clones equally and for all makes under General Motors such as Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Hummer, Saturn, Opel, Vauxhall, and Saab.. The programming is illustrated using a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt LS and the www.acdelcotds.com subscription service features using a Techline PC using Tech2 legacy passthru mode to update the Radio.

Applicable to model year 2008 thru 2013, which is when the Tech2 ended and was fully replaced by the GM Multiple Diagnostic Interface tool, or GM MDI and MDI 2 and TIS 2 Web subscriptions. This method is available with TIS2000 for GM vehicles older than 2008 as well.

I recommend that you buy gm tech2 on Obd2 tool website. They are cheap, logistics is fast, and after-sales service is also very good. I have been using it for a year and there is no problem with the quality of the product.

Mangoose Pro GM II Diagnostic & Programming FAQs

Here are a lot of questions and answers of Mangoose Pro GM II (the dealer or the copy), including software compatible (Tech2Win and GDS2), comparison with GM MDI & Tech 2 & Snap On Solus, diagnostic & programming & reprogramming issues….

I prefer Mangoose Pro II because of price…what do you think..will it work with my corsa d without problem? Or GM MDI better?

GM Mangoose PRO only for Opel/Vauxhall/GM with Tech2Win and GDS2.
Full coverage diagnostic and SPS programming
GM MDI can be use as a passthru for other software too
This is one of the difference
Both are good

I really just want to know what software and equipment I need to get me going with the GM Cars I actually have for diagnostics and programming.

GM Tech2 scanner or Tech2 software can used with gds2 or mvci, genuine is little high, but cheaper you can get from chine,
other is Mongoose Pro GM II, depend what exactly you want to do.

Is this Mangoose Pro GM 2 that is listed on Drew’s website?

Yes, this is the same as the Mongoose Pro GM2.

Can you buy the china clone of Mangoose GM2? If so, how much are they?

I bought mine for 70usd off obd2tool.com

Will this interface perform diag. and programming on GM Global A vehicle (with SPS and GDS2)

Yes, the Mongoose Pro GM II will work with SPS, GDS2 and Tech2Win.

Is the MongoosePro GM II compatible with “Data Bus Diagnostic” Tool software?

Drew Tech has stated that as of early March 2015, the Mongoose Pro GM and the CarDAQ-M are both compatible with GM’s “Data Bus Diagnostic” Tool software.

When using Mangoose Pro GM II to SPS programming, does it program at the same speed as the GM MDI?

The MongoosePro appears to flash as quickly as the MDI.
The MongoosePro GM is definitely quicker than the Tech 2.

The MDI cost 4x more than the MongoosePro GM II but it is not 4x faster.

I have TIS2WEB, Tech2WIN, GDS2 & MDI. Is the MongoosePro GM II plug and play or does it needs to be configured?

The MangoosePro GM II is plug and play. Make sure to install the Tech2Win driver if you want to use the application.

Can this product be used as a replacement for mdi? Used for Tech2win and gds2?

MongoosePro GM II is compatible with Tech2win and GDS2 software for scan tool diagnostics, and it will flash GM-vehicles.

The MDI is a separate tool that is also compatible with Tech2win and GDS2.

Yes, the MongoosePro GM II is a replacement for the MDI.

Both tools do flashing.

Also, both tools require a subscription

Can you guide me the way to install Mangoose GM software?

First thing you need to do with this setup is access the Tech2Win driver settings.

Next trick I think is how to get security access.

In detail…

Can the MDI do more than Mongoose Pro GM II can?

I already have a Tech 2 and a GM subscription and I need to be able to do the newer GM’s. Is there any reason not to buy this instead of the MDI? Will I be missing anything?

The Mongoose Pro GM II ALMOST does everything the MDI does. Currently that is:
– Module reflashing with SPS
– Diagnostics with Tech2Win software
– Diagnostics with GDS2 software.

UPDATE: The GDS2 software package includes the data bus diagnostic tool. Using the data bus diagnostic tool, the MDI will allow you to see voltage levels on the data bus, the Mongoose will not. The Mongoose will run the data bus diagnostic tool, but only partially.
Bosch corporate provides no support for installation and use of the MDI with GM software.
Drew does.
This is the big price difference.

Which tool do you recommend performing “advanced functions” on GM Vehicles? The cars I have are a 2003 Monte Carlo SS, and a 2009 Cadillac STS.

In order to perform “advanced functions” on GM Vehicles you are going to need something that talks with all the computers on the GM Vehicle.

The ones that I know of that do this are:

1) GM Tech 2 (will handle everything including programming the computers “updating calibrations”) This tool is being phased out but it’s still supported until they can get the MDI fully operational. Either way this works Stand Alone without a Laptop/PC.

2) GM MDI (Some say there are limitations with some model years but others say it’s better since the updates) Of course using Tech2Win to mimic what the GM Tech 2 does) – This performs like a J2534 Programmer as a Pass Thru Device. DrewTech and companies like Ease Diagnostics make J2534 Pass Thru Devices that will do this as well. And they sell their own flavor of Diagnostics Scan Software. Keep in mind only the GM stuff will do EVERYTHING for GM Vehicles.

3) Snap On Solus (This will do a lot not only on GM Vehicles but others as well. And it can do some of the advanced functions like Automated Brake Bleed on the ABS unit just like the GM Tech 2 and GM MDI) – Keep in mind there are many functions that the Snap On won’t do. The Tech 2 and MDI will allows you the option to access and control everything on GM Vehicles.

4) Mongoose Pro GM II (It can do things as GM MDI does.) Even the cheap Mangoose China clone is able to recover and reprogram modules perfectly and works with the newer h***ed 2017 GDS2!!!

In summary, Magoose Pro GM II features:

Plug and play: yes!

GM diagnostics and programming: confirmed!

Module recover and reprogramming: confirmed!

SPS programming speed: fast!

“Data Bus Diagnostic” Tool software: compatible!

Tech2win, GDS2, SPS: compatible!

Mongoose Pro GM II ALMOST does everything the MDI does!

http://obd2tools.cuisine-spirit.com/mangoose-pro-gm-ii-diagnostic-programming-faqs-304355.html

Should I buy GM MDI instead of Tech 2 clone

The Tech2 clone is definitely fine, but I think people looking for a good tool now should really look at an MDI clone instead.

The Future of the Tech 2

The Tech 2 remains an essential tool through at least the 2010 model year. The GM MDI will not support past models when its diagnostic capabilities are introduced. And, the Tech2 will continue to be needed to diagnose all vehicles fromprevious model years. Remote programming with the Tech 2 will continue to be supported for use on all 2007 and previous vehicles.Additional information will be supplied in future.

HOW WILL THE G-M MDI BE USED?

The new G-M MDI can be used only in the Pass-Thru method. This means you can use it as your programming tool, while your Tech 2/CANdi remains available for diagnostics and other duties.

I have issues with it, however:

The GM MDI will not support past models when its diagnostic capabilities are introduced.
I’m not sure what this means. The GM MDI WILL clearly support past model years with the Tech2win applications. So I’m not sure what this statement actually means. The only thing I can think of is that GM will remove pass thru support at a later date, but since its all been cracked already, this shouldn’t matter.

The new G-M MDI can be used only in the Pass-Thru method. This means you can use it as your programming tool, while your Tech 2/CANdi remains available for diagnostics and other duties.
This statement implies that the pass thru method is a bad thing. Considering the Tech2win application works perfectly with EVERY function on all GM vehicles as far back as 1996, I don’t understand what this is really saying. It implies that you can’t do diagnostic troubleshooting using pass-thru, when in fact you can.

As far as I can tell from my testing, this is a basic sales pitch in order to encourage people to keep the Tech2 as well as purchase a MDI2 unit – both of which are incredibly expensive if purchased legitimately through GM.

In reality, you don’t need a  Obd2 scan tool Tech2 and a MDI2. An MDI interface is more than enough especially on our older cars like the C5 corvette which GM will unlikely ever release further PCM upgrades for given the fact they were discontinued over 10 years ago.
