How to Install BMW Standard Tools

This thread describes how I install and configure BMW Standard Tools, the suite of BMW software that includes INPA, NCS Expert, WinKFP, Tool32. I have my own custom way of doing this that is the shortest and simplest steps I could figure out. This set up is for E46 only.

What is needed?
– Windows 7, 8, 10, 11 laptop (32-bit or 64-bit), must have AC adapter plugged in
– K+DCAN cable with a switch, for example: Amazon.com: K+DCAN Cable with Switch
– Installer files from my Google Drive

What are the steps?
– Download the files
– Run the installer
– Replace the installed folders with ec-apps.zip
– Install the driver for the cable
– Test at the car

The following posts cover each step for Windows 10. Other Windows versions may be slightly different.

1. Download the files
– Use this link to access the BMW Standard Tools shared folder
– BMW Standard Tools – Google Drive
– Download all files in the shared folder

2. Run the Installer
These steps cover running the installer. You accept the defaults on each installer window except one where you uncheck the top two checkboxes. The following steps are for Windows 10.

– Open File Explorer and navigate to your Downloads folder.
– Right click on the BMW_Standard_Tools_Setup_2.12.0.exe file, and select Troubleshoot compatibility from the menu.
– Under Select troubleshooting option, click Try recommended settings
– Under Test compatibility settings for the program, click Test the program
– At the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes
– After the installer launches, accept the defaults and click Next on each page except for the Select Additional Tasks page where you uncheck the top two boxes for Execute backup and restore wizard
– Continue until the installer gets to the end at the Completing the BMW Standard Tools Setup Wizard window, click Finish to reboot

3. Replace the installed folders with ec-apps.zip
After completing the installer and rebooting, we need to replace the folders created by the installer with those inside the ec-apps.zip file.
The installer creates all the folders and program files, but not the INPA scripts and required data files. The ec-apps.zip file contains the same files and folders the installer puts down, but I’ve added the INPA scripts and imported the data files in all the right places.

– Delete the following folders and all the files inside them
– C:\EC-APPS
– C:\EDIABAS
– C:\Entwicklungsdaten
– C:\NCSEXPER
– C:\NFS-Backup
– Extract ec-apps.zip into C:\ so that the following folders are created
– C:\EC-APPS
– C:\EDIABAS
– C:\NCSEXPER

4. Install driver for cable

– Open Device Manager
– Plug in the K+DCAN cable
– Wait a few minutes for Windows to automatically install the driver
– If it succeeds, you’ll see a USB Serial Port (COM1) item under the Ports section
– Sometimes Windows fails to install the driver. In that case, extract the CDM21228_Setup.zip file and then run the CDM21228_Setup.exe program accepting all defaults to complete driver installation.
– Verify the COM port shown is COM1. If not, change it to COM1.
– Or, if you cannot change it to COM1, edit the C:\EDIABAS\BIN\obd.ini file and change the COM port number at the top to match what Device Manager has for the cable. Those two must always match!
Cable under Ports in Device Manager

COM port setting in obd.ini file

5. Test at the car

– Connect the K+DCAN cable to the car and laptop
– Turn ignition key to position 2 (run)
– Turn off all accessories, such as radio, lights, etc.
– Start INPA by double-clicking its desktop shortcut.
– Verify there are two solid black circles at the top of the main screen.
– If they are empty circles, INPA hasn’t connected to the car. Verify the COM port of the cable and in the obd.ini file are the same.

Common INPA errors
If you see these errors when running INPA, you can safely ignore them.

How to code BMW F10 F31 F25 with E-Sys or ICOM Ista-D

Car model: BMW F10 / F31 / F25

Purpose: coding the cars

How-to-code-BMW-F10-F31-F25-with-E-Sys-or-ICOM-Ista-D-1

BMW coding tools to have:
ESYS + ENET
ICOM Next

Target user:
Newbie

Question:

BMW shuts down the ignition after a while so how can we prevent the car to shut down the ignition if you are programming ?

@tokarszczak experience:

I always program all ecus only with ENET cable– car never died and all work always done. Even with Icom you can brick car it you don’t know what are you doing. Why you write that it will be slow? Its same channels of communication like in ICOM.

Ignition won’t turn off when programming.

I don’t know speed of this two- for me programming nbt evo with 35 minutes is fine with enet. Try to flash some difficult nbt or kombi with icom- always problem and enet helps me a lot with it. Have 2 original Icom- both faulty and repaired in BMW. There was few threads about killing a car with Icom and programming in Ista- so it is possible. Enet is not bad for work with F and G series but if you want only click start button in Ista and wait for finish- Icom is for you. With Enet you can do same job.

@Matthew53 review:

When executing TAL, esys will take care of ignition, so it won’t turn off.

ISTA will also take care of ignition. It will also write to you first what to do. For F10 that is – do no open/close driver’s door during operation.

@2013m5 review:

I owned few BMW E, F and G series. I never use ISTA-D with eNet cable to program F or G series.
Always used icom or ICOM Next for BMW to program with ISTA-D over my home network, and never have any problem.
I bought the iCom Next A 81 31 2 360 883.
Buy the iCom Next for your F series cars.
Here the steps I prepared before I connect the iCom on my F or G series.
1. Latch the driver seat belt.
2. Latch the drive door latch for coupe and sedan.
3. Turn ON ignition.
4. Connect the iCom.
5. Run ISTA-D

@Enabled review:

Enet is completely fine, even factory uses enet…..

@ snypertje review:

Programming with ista+ is easy.

@ lmao1 review:

My recommendation, don’t use ISTA+ and ENET for programming…. anyway if you want o risk it, use ESYS + ENET.

2 times I updated with ista+enet went wrong, I had luck to recover the whole car with esys + icom, good luck.
ps: about ista+ and ignition, Voltage is not checked in ISTA with ENET.

@ Matthew53 review

Most of the time, when you updating the whole car, it does do everything and you don’t have to put your fingers in esys, but there are also situations where ISTA fail with programming one of the modules (sometimes more) and refuse to reprogram until you replace it. It’s good, if it’s stuck in programming mode, but still response. Then you need to try to reprogram with esys.
If you want to start with programming, then in my opinion, you should definitely be familiar with esys and its functionality.

@ Breach review

Just use e-Sys and ENET – that’s what I’ve always used for my F10. As long as you have power, have no retrofits/donor parts and watch out for mismatching HWEL/HWEPs it’s pretty safe and straightforward. Sometimes you may have to run ABLs from ISTA, but not for KAFAS. Anyway, there are almost no updates now for the F10 and you’re already at a pretty recent ilevel.

If you really want to use ISTA then buy an ICOM. I’m in the same situation – personal use, so can’t justify the cost.

How to Resolve BMW ICOM ISTAD license expired Error

Many BMW ICOM users will no doubt have encountered a situation where they have had Rheingold ISTA/D running successfully on their computers, only to later encounter the situation where they can no longer access the software and get a license expired message. The majority of suggestions to resolve this situation found on the internet suggest that users adjust the bios setting of their machines to a date before the original license expiry date but as the result of an enquiry from another user, I decided to post my resolution of this problem (which has been tested and found to work on machines running both Windows 10 and XP Operating systems):-

1. Run Regedit
2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3. left click SOFTWARE
4. left click BMWGROUP
5. left click ISPI
6. left click Rheingold
7. on the right hand panel of the screen, left click Licence and choose Modify
8. Be careful to modify only the entries on this line as described…use the left arrow key to scroll along the line to a date format entry, which is followed by the words Package Expire and change the date to 2072-09-20

9. After you have changed the package expiration date, continue to use the left arrow key to scroll further back along the line until you find another date format entry, which is followed by the word Expiration (this date will be identical to the original entry that you altered during the last step) – change this date to 2072-09-20

10.When you have completed the above changes, collapse the registry editor back to show only the HKEY menus, then close the registry editor and restart your computer.

11. CONGRATULATIONS, your Rheingold licence is now current until 2072-09-20. Note when editing the expiration date for ISTA, you should maintain the original date format (usually YYYY MM DD) – as some packages use an BMW ICOM A2 and some use a hypenated seperator for date entry values.

If you can’t find it at that registry entry, try here-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BMWGroup\ISPI\Rheingold
